Functional Orientation of the Cup In THA: Considering The Patient-Specific Pelvic Variabilities In Different Daily Positions
Total hip arthroplasty is still today prone to many complications. Several studies highlighted that the usual static safe zone for the cup orientation is not suitable for all patients because it does not consider the patient-specific postures in different positions and neither prevent from impingement during movements. Therefore, a new Functional Safe Zone (FSZ) is proposed that considers different daily positions, namely sitting, standing and supine. The proposed FSZ allows the accurate estimation of a patient-specific cup orientation considering the femoral neck orientation, the target range of motion and the pelvic tilt. Analysing the influence of each input parameter, we found that patients having a low pelvic mobility have higher risks of postoperative instability. Using this FSZ could help surgeons in identifying and managing these patients.
