Course de fonds

With its 10.2 million square kilometers of maritime spaces (surface area), France has long been at the forefront of deep-sea exploration. And the research ambitions of public institutes have been caught up in the dreams of billionaires and industrialists.

The human activities envisaged in these areas, such as the collection of polymetallic nodules, worry both researchers and ocean protection associations. Should this new gold rush be encouraged or limited? Is it even reasonable to consider it? Among researchers as well as within ocean protection associations, many fear that exploration will serve as a Trojan horse for exploitation.
